It is great for those who have never taken the time to study the rape of Nanking but are interested to know about one of the worst atrocities the human race has ever seen. Please take the time to listen to this short audiobook about the war crime which is largely forgotten and even until today denied in Japan. 



Germans have paid at least 60 billion dollars in compensation and through other forms to acknowledge and repent for what they had done in WW2, while Japan has not paid anything and does not even acknowledge the level of criminality which their army perpetrated on the world.

Well, I haven't been listening to any new music these days because I have had an earful of audiobooks. So I figured I should start posting the good ones here. This last one was a personal story from a half Persian half Swiss woman who grew up in Switzerland and ended up in the confines of Saudi Arabia. She explains her slow transformation from a free western woman to one who accepts the subjugation of women in the Saudi society.

Married in 1974 to Osama Bin Laden's older brother, Carmen Bin Laden spent nine years futilely attempting to adjust to both the conservative, tight-knit Bin Laden clan and the repressive Saudi culture she was naively unprepared to face. Half-Swiss and half-Persian, Carmen was raised in relative freedom in Europe. Carried away by romantic notions of love and loyalty, she initially struggled to bridge the gap between her background as an independent Western woman and Middle Eastern expectations of female submission and subservience. Life among the huge Bin Laden clan was especially treacherous since they claimed myriad complex ties to the Saudi royal family. After the birth of three daughters, with her Western-educated husband becoming increasingly parochial and reactionary, she realized it was time to throw off the abaya that literally and figuratively concealed the woman she once was and desperately wanted to be again. Although the notorious Osama Bin Laden appears a few times in the book and his name is bandied about to hook readers, the real story is Carmen's bid for self-actualization within a society and a family that harshly resisted and rejected every minor challenge to traditional wisdom and authority. Not wanting her three young children to be subjected to this upbringing, Carmen fights her way out of a painful marriage and makes a life for her family in Europe and America. Just when things seem to be leveling out, the horror of 9/11 occurs and Carmen has to fight the stigma attached to her married name of Bin Laden. A riveting testament to courage and determination, this intimate memoir of one woman's spiritual reawakening and odyssey has best-seller written all over it.

It's just one long MP3 which might be annoying to some, but if you use itunes it automatically remembers the position so it's much easier for me.

I bought this as an LP for 2 reasons. The cover looked like a 4AD album so much I had to turn it around to see what label it was on. When I did check the back I saw the first track "Johnny On The Spot". I loved 4AD artists and similar artists, and I collected Johnny songs (there are more than one would think). So I bought the LP and although it didn't sound anything like a 4AD band the album did get regular play for about 6 months.

Someone recently told me this was emo. It doesn't sound like the crap that I'm subjected to at the bar I work at, but maybe this is emo if emo was good. Anyway, it sounds good to me if it is emo or not.

Extra Fancy (Brian Grillo) - Sinnerman

HIV-Positive Brian Grillo fronted this nearly forgotten pop punk band. I took this CD with me to work because their cover of (the American gospel song made famous [at least to me] by Nina Simone) Sinnerman, was so perfect for the work environment. The video played frequently on MTV until the label abruptly dropped the band and closed the homocore arm altogether. I can't help but think it had to do with Brian being out and more importantly outspoken about being positive, because if a record label can't make a few million off of exploiting a sexy, fit, shirtless gay man banging on an oil can, they have no business in being a record label to begin with. These guys made the other homocore bands look like, well, pansies...

Brian is in his late 40's now and still putting out music. His new album "Stomping Back On Fire" is available here.

It's hard to choose a Bongwater album, I really like them all but I don't listen to any of them very much anymore. Paul showed me Bongwater after I started getting into Negativland and I guess looking back it kinda makes sense even though they are really not related to each other in any way. Ann Magnuson and Kramer make some unforgettable music on this disk. I think Ann is actually brilliant, I wish I could come up with crap like that.

Over The Edge Radio (Don Joyce of Negativland) - Arabian Night

This was probably the show that grabbed my attention the most out of any. It covers Iran, Israel, Palestinians, Egypt etc... Of course the then recent attacks on the World Trade Center is brought up in the broadcast as well as fundamentalist Islam and its effect on the Middle East and the rest of the world. I remember that night Siouxsie was playing in San Francisco and I didn't go and was regretting it when I heard the samples of her song Israel.
As always the radio show has call-ins, "When your phone stops ringing, you’re on the air and in the mix, don't say hello", there are plenty of callers ringing in with their stupid comments that only KPFA listeners could say.
I think that it was Negativland's Crosley Bendix and his reviews that made me cynical towards critics and blogs reviewing film and music, because who really gives a squant what you (or myself) think about a piece of culture anyway. Besides the fact that I doubt anyone is reading this or cares what is jotted down here, I try not to make reviews of the music and instead just wallow in my nostalgia of where I was when I heard the music or what it means to me.
Negativland is one that brings up loads of nostalgia, but every time I listen to something of theirs I also hear new things, or notice new things.
Here Joyce cuts up the audio from film, interviews, and music to paint a picture of a complex situation that only an artist can articulate so clearly and unbiasedly, though his anti-religious stance comes across as it does in many of his shows.
Gore Vidal, Bill Maher and all sorts of political commentators have their words cut up and pasted together to present Don Joyce's perspective which is much more palatable to me than most of the analysts he samples. I wish I could do that in my life, just take bits and pieces that please me from each personal conversation I have, and leave the rest in the recycle bin on a hard drive.

Here is the post-funk Israeli band that everyone loves. I hardly ever listen to this album unless a tourist asks me to play some popular Israeli music. I heard it while traveling to the nature reserve beach Hof HaBonim (workers beach) where I illegally camped with 2 strangers whom I had just met. It was a great album for the car ride. The beach was more memorable than the music. A clean nature reserve untouched by mans dirty hands, a refuge of peace and beauty in this unholy land.

There is a 7" or EP called Le Secret, and a demo or something called Tristesse Hivernale. Both are very heavy and cannot be confused with Shoegaze, but this is my favorite from the band so far. It might be the mandarine juice talking.

Swedish folk/jazz/hip hop isn't really my thing, I almost turned it off after hearing the first track but after giving it a fair listen there is something about these guys hooks that got me. The second half of the album definitely is my favorite half but the whole thing gets regular play in the mornings. This album will be the newest addition to the pubs database, though I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who will play it. As a barmaid it is really nice when people come and ask for the name of the band you're playing and it happens a lot with this band, even Swedish people. I saw that this group is playing at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco on Saturday January 23 and I felt really homesick because I'm sure they aren't planning a tour of the middle east anytime soon. The band is from Luleå in Sweden. Fel del av gården gets the most play at work, but that isn't because it is my favorite. I found some translated lyrics to the song here.

I will likely forget about this band next year, few things last very long for me, but I am enjoying this album a lot at the moment.

This makes me feel better when I'm sad. The first album I had of theirs was Heaven Or Las Vegas but on this album she actually has lyrics that make sense and that I understand. I attended a wedding instead of going to see them play in SF on their farewell tour. This is much more pop and cheerful than their dark and more gothic early stuff, which I love as well. This is their 8th album and must have been released around the time I got into them which was 1993ish. I have bought every album of theirs in every format I could find. They are one of the best ever. Track 1,4,6 and 10 are my favorite but the 3rd track probably is the best since it was the hit. Today was a hard day and this is all I had to help. It's pouring rain in the tin roof metropolitan.

Rodriguez - Cold Fact

The bars can stay open 24 hours here. Most close around 4 or 5 am. The bar I work at never closes before 5am and after cleaning a bar I want to go sit in one and enjoy some Captain Morgan's Original Spiced Rum in fresh orange juice (it's yummy). The bar across the street from the bar I work in is open 24 hours. It is one of the most successful bars in the city being in business for 12 or 15 years which is a huge deal in Tel Aviv considering the unstable economy tied to the political situation especially for businesses that rely at least partially on tourism. The Minzar (in English The Monastery) is a cesspool of left wing and anti-Zionist hipsters, it's also one of the few places in the world you will find Taybeh beer (Palestinian beer) on draft. About this time in the morning barmen are playing full albums and they are known for their eclectic taste which is why I started going there 7 years ago. This album has been a staple there for the last few years. It's taken a girl from San Francisco traveling half way around the world to hear some good American 60's and 70's folk music. I used to feel a little insulted that this one specific barman played this album every time I was in the bar, even when I was the only one in the bar like it was personal, but I stopped feeling that way cause I honestly don't really care one way or the other and I just enjoy the music.

Apparently Rodriguez put out 2 albums that didn't sell well and quit the music business disappearing into obscurity. Somehow the music ended up going platinum in South Africa or Australia or some place like that. There were all sorts of rumors that he died in jail or shot himself on stage, but some journalist decided to track him down and found him perusing a political career in Detroit around 1997 or 1998.

Crucify Your Mind, I Wonder, Like Janis and Jane S Piddy have to be my very favorite tracks but the whole album is really good.

Various L.A. Artists - Radio Tokyo Tapes, Vol. III

I was 18 when a friend who turned me onto loads of good music recorded some of this LP on a mix tape for me. I got him to copy the whole album for me. I listened to the cassette a lot with this really cool girl I used to hang out with. Finally 2 or so years later I got one of the cute guys that worked at Amoeba Records to look for when a used copy came in and save it for me to buy. It never got pressed on CD so I took the LP and paid someone $50 to make me a CD of it so I could bring the music with me to work. That was about 14 years ago. The guy didn't even get the tracks right and cut off the last track in the middle of the song. For a long time I was hoping that someone else would post this LP on a blog so I could download it or maybe they would release it on CD but, since no one else has posted it and it's obvious it's never getting repressed, I had to go track by track and fix each song so that the songs start and stop at the beginning and at the end, and lucky me found the last track as part of an archived radio show so I am able to present the complete album.

This was a really hard post to create. My browser crashed while I was writing this and uploading the file to rapidshare so I had to start all over. I searched for a decent image of the cover since my LP's are literally on the other side of the planet and it was really hard to find a big enough image. Finally I found one but I had to edit it as well, that with all the editing of all the tracks, the whole thing took me much longer than I want to admit. I really do love this compilation I guess or I wouldn't have put so much effort into posting it. Even if the Rollins spoken word thing sucks, all the other songs are great especially the Cohen cover and the Minutemen. Actually, I can't try to pick my favorites because this album has lasted so long as something I enjoy listening to my favorites change every time. I have no idea if the band Alisa ever put out anything else or went on to do other projects, I wish I knew cause I like them a lot. The Revolver song is not the same band as Revolver the band from London, but I like them too.

Baby Bird - Fatherhood

I used to shop several times a week in Amoeba Records and Rasputin Music on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. One of those times I was upstairs at Rasputin and flipping through the LP's and I ran across this gem. I hadn't heard him, or of him, but I collected pictures of pregnant women and the cover was enough of a reason to shell out $8.99. It turned out to be a pretty good album and lasted as a regular on my turntable for about 5 months.

I think I remember reading in the liner notes that the whole thing was done in his bedroom on his 4-track. It's simple Lofi pop music. I think the second track on side B is what hooked me (a perfect track to play at the bar if I get stuck working on Christmas) but it easily could have been 4th track (Bad Blood) or the 8th track (Goodnight) on side A, the whole album is full of his very personal lyrics and clever rhymes. I was never able to find anything else by Baby Bird until I came to Tel Aviv and heard some later work of his being played on the air, but they'll play anything on the radio in this country..

The Residents - Wormwood: Curious Stories from the Bible

I had seen The Residents a year before they released this album when they played at the Fillmore in San Francisco on Halloween. I went with my dearly departed friend and lover Jay (They had booked 4 shows in a row). We went in full costume and so did everyone else. The environment at the Fillmore was electric, in spite of their being 4 shows booked it was so crowded you could barely standup (I'm sure it was sold out and probably the other 3 shows were as well). People were anxious and excited and you could feel it in the air, seriously. Needless to say it was a great show so when I got a chance to see them again the next year I took my then Christian boyfriend who was trying really hard (but unsuccessfully) to get "into" the counter-culture of San Francisco. The entire performance was The Residents playing out the stories from the bible. I didn't realize that he would be offended by their renditions of the bible stories, but I guess he was because it seemed like the shock lasted for several weeks. The show the year before is one of the best shows I ever attended, the show for this albums was pretty amazing as well. The Christian never loosened up and a year later he left me for a girl who worked at a record label whom "his friends liked better".

The Residents are performance artists in a way that you cannot even come close to imagining the entire conceptual art by listening to their albums alone, but the albums are still pretty good.

Camper Van Beethoven - Vampire Can Mating Oven

About 9 years ago I was casually seeing this guy, he wanted to give me some music so he gave me this EP on cassette. I already had Camper Van Beethoven's album Key Lime Pie which I loved and I loved this EP just as much. I listened to it for about 3 months straight. I thought it was so sweet that he had chosen this to gift to me. The sweet sentimental catchy love songs may have been the reason I fell in love with him, they certainly were a great soundtrack for the affair in any case. Later (after he changed his number and stopped speaking to me), I realized that he didn't really put much thought into what music to give me, he just wanted to give me something and this was the best choice because, of the music he had that I was familiar with and liked, he would miss this one the least.

It's a secret that after 9 years I'm still in love with him. That's the reason I can't listen to this EP anymore.

These tracks all appear on Camper Vantiquities as well as the 1988 CD reissue of The Third Album. This EP came with really silly liner notes, I don't know if the liner notes were included with Vantiquities or The Third Album, this EP is not really representative of their sound, certainly not The Key Lime Pie album that hooked me to begin with, it's not all that rare or special, just special to me.
